HISTORY OF THE CARL SPAIN CENTER
The Carl Spain Center on Race Studies and Spiritual Action was founded in 2018 by Dr. Jerry Taylor, Associate Professor of Bible at Abilene Christian University (ACU). Dr. Taylor chose to name the new center after Carl Spain, a legendary figure at ACU whose prophetic voice was a catalyst for change on the campus in the mid 1900’s.

MISSION/VISION OF THE CARL SPAIN CENTER
The Carl Spain Center on Race Studies and Spiritual Action was created to honor the legacy of Carl Spain by conducting research on the historical and contemporary role of race and racism in the church and its Christian institutions.

2021 RULS - BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA
Each year we gather for what we call our Racial Unity Leadership Summit, which is a four day academic-style conference where we focus on Race Studies. At each summit, we are guided by a particular topic on the intersection of race and religion and hear presentations from scholars and pastors alike. This year the summit will be held in Birmingham, Alabama co-hosted by Homewood Church of Christ and Roosevelt City Church of Christ.

TOURS
Wednesday Afternoon beginning at approximately 1:00PM, September 15 - Tour of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute located across the street from the 16th Street Baptist Church. Wednesday, September 15 marks the 58th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church killing 4 young girls: Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley.

Thursday Morning and Afternoon, September 16 - Bus tour to the Legacy Museum and Memorial in Montgomery, AL. The bus will leave from the Homewood Church of Christ at approximately 7:30 AM Thursday morning.
